Make sure to submit your drafts and peer review forms by 5pm today (Friday)! We do not meet as a full class next week. Instead, I have opened Tuesday for conference time! Here are some reminders about what your “scores” will look like on D2L, followed by work expectations for the week.

Grading & Conference Reminders

None of your drafts will receive letter grades in the Gradebook on D2L. I may be forced to enter a numerical score (out of a possible 1 point for each assignment), but don’t pay attention to the number. (If D2L doesn’t allow me to enter these text symbols, I’ll post an announcement explaining what the next steps are for me to convey your scores to you. Please don’t panic in the meantime!) We’ll be using the following letters and symbols to indicate levels of completion or additional work needed:

Parameters Met, Complete!
+Needs Work, Parameters Unmet
L★ or L+Late/Complete or Late/Needs Work (if submitted within the 1 week grace period)
MMissed (not submitted within the 1 week grace period)

If you don’t submit your draft on time, you’ll receive an L. If you don’t submit your draft within one week of the original due date, it becomes an M. L and M designations cannot be changed, and both impact your guaranteed final course grade of B+. Refer to the Grading Contract for a more specific breakdown of the allowances and requirements to maintain a course grade of B+ or higher.

On Phase 1 drafts, you will not get written comments. Like a literary agent, I will provide editorial notes to you out loud in our feedback conference over Zoom, and it’s your responsibility to write down my suggestions, ask for clarification, and/or work through portions of your essay together (work we can continue to do in a Week 5 conference if we run out of time).

Feedback conferences cannot be made up if you miss them. Put differently, if you don’t schedule one or miss the appointment, you miss your chance at receiving feedback from me before revising for Phase 2.

Week 4 Schedule of Work

As usual, the agenda is stated in the calendar. This week will look different because you will largely be continuing work on your Essay 1, moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2. Remember that I’m here for you during this process, during my available hours Monday – Thursday this week. Here’s a list of items you’re responsible for this week:

  • Reread your essay (and peer review forms you received) and write down questions you have for me for our conference
  • Sign up for feedback conferences by using the link on the Calendar on D2L
  • For yourself, complete the Discourse Narrative Worksheet on D2L, which you do not need to submit to me, but will help you…
  • …begin to incorporate narrative elements into your draft as you move towards Phase 2.
  • Write a 1-paragraph revision plan after our feedback conference, in which you summarize the editorial notes you received from me and prioritize your tasks for Phase 2. Post this plan to your Slack #workshop channel.

You can revise and continue drafting in the same Google Doc you were working on with your peers, to make it easier for your Phase 2 workshop in Week 5.
