This week we will be figuring out ways to conduct library research for your ethnography. As always, refer to the calendar for a quick list of your responsibilities for the week, but here they are as well. Keep in mind that you will not finalize your research in our live session
- Reading: BEAM Handout (D2L)
- Reading: Purdue OWL Online Research Strategies
- Reading/Writing: Ethnographic Research Tutorial (D2L)
- Prewriting: Brainstorm and draft potential controlling idea for Essay 3
- Writing: Unit 2 Reflection
By Monday, I’ll post the General Feedback blog post regarding your Essay 2 Phase 2 drafts. As we decided in class, I’ll review your Field Notes on Monday and try to post the general feedback to Slack by Monday or Tuesday evening. For more personalized feedback, you can schedule an appointment with me.
Live Session Agenda
In our live session on Tuesday 3/30, we will do the following:
- Go over General Feedback for Essay 2 Phase 2
- Go over General Feedback for Field Notes, even in abbreviated form
- Introduce BEAM vocabulary for research
- Take a tour through the library website and databases
- Possible breakout room activity to engage in secondary research using your field notes
- Go over questions about identifying social dynamics that would be fruitful to analyze in your own communities, formulating research questions, and formulating controlling ideas (aka research hypotheses) from those research questions
Looking Ahead…
In Week 11, we’ll embark on secondary research while we continue drafting our controlling ideas. We do not have a live session on Tuesday 4/6, but you can meet with me to discuss any questions you have about formulating controlling ideas from research questions and differentiating research projects from topical reports.
