Thanks in advance for engaging in your group workshops, completing your Essay 3 Phase 1 Peer Review Forms, and submitting your Essay 3 Phase 1 drafts to me in a timely fashion! As usual, I’ll spend the weekend checking your peer review responses and reading your submissions.
We do not meet as a full class in Week 12. Instead, I will be conducting feedback conferences Monday through Thursday of Week 12. Feedback conferences cannot be made up if you miss them—or, put differently, if you don’t schedule one or miss the appointment, you miss your chance at feedback with me before revising for Phase 2. Remember that feedback conferences are mandatory regardless of the score you receive. On Phase 1 drafts, you will not get written comments. Like last time, for Phase 2 I’ll write a General Feedback post that contains issues I see across 90% of papers in all 3 of my sections, and I’ll write personal comments for you if I see the need to add anything extra. For Phase 1, you’ll receive comments when we talk over Zoom in our feedback conference this coming week.
I recommend that you schedule Zoom meetings for 15 minutes to 30 minutes, as we will mostly be discussing how to proceed with Essay 3. If you have questions about other work, you should make a separate conference for Week 13 (10/19-10/23) to discuss it.
This will be the last mandatory feedback conference of the semester, but I highly recommend you keep meeting with me to figure out how to write and revise for Essay 3 and for the Final Portfolio!
Week 12 Schedule of Work
The agenda is stated in the calendar. You will largely be continuing to work on your Essay 3, moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2 and more seriously diving into secondary research. Here’s a list of items you’re responsible for this week:
- Reading: Sample Sources Posts (this is an old HW assignment from my previous courses—in the interest of streamlining your workload, you don’t have to post anything to Slack, but these sample student posts might be helpful for you in figuring out how to summarize and incorporate sources in your own drafts.)
- Reading: Sources and Analysis
- Reading: Three Levels of Source Use [not listed in calendar, optional help]
- Prewriting: Introduce and summarize your “B” and “A” source for your Essay 3 Phase 2 draft, using the Unit 3 blog posts as a guide
- Writing: Post-conference revision plan (posted to Slack #workshop-group by Friday at 5pm)
- Writing: All revisions of “Needs Work” (+) scores received in Units 1 and 2 are due by 5pm Friday 4/16. Email them to me. I will not be granting extensions for these revisions.
- Writing: If you have not completed the Ethnographic Research Tutorial, I am accepting them with a late penalty until 4/30. I will not be granting extensions past that date.
Again, we will not be meeting this Tuesday, 4/13.
Looking Ahead…
If you receive a “Needs Work” (+) score on a Unit 3 draft, you have until 4/30 to revise for a Complete (★). Plan accordingly. I will not be granting extensions for these revisions, and your Final Portfolio will be due shortly after this draft.
On another housekeeping note, you’re running out of time for the Writing Center requirement, so make sure you’ve made your appointments. I receive an email every week letting me know who went, as well as the duration of the session and what you worked on.
We will be meeting as a full class in Week 13 on Tuesday 4/20. We will be generally discussing how to move from Essay 3 Phase 1 to Phase 2, and we’ll also discuss the Final Portfolio at that time. Essay 3 Phase 2 is due on Friday 4/23 as well.
After I receive your Phase 2 drafts, I’ll create a column in the Gradebook called “Estimated Grade.” Using the Grading Contract, I’ll tally up the amount of ★, +, L, and M scores for drafts, Slack HW, peer review, the ethnographic research tutorial, and the WC requirement, and I’ll post your estimated final grade. This grade will include everything except the Final Portfolio, so you should have a good sense of where you stand in the class.
